Northville-Placid Trail (NPT) - Long Lake Spur Trail Open

8/28/2018

It's a reality! If you are northbound on the Northville-Placid Trial (NPT), you can now hike directly into the village of Long Lake without having to walk along the highway. This new trail, which was a joint effort between Adirondack Hamlets to Huts, Hamilton County, the Town of Long Lake, the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, and the NYS Department of State allows hikers who want, to come into the village to pick up supplies, get a hot shower, cold drink, hot meal, and a soft night's bed.
If your goal is to avoid civilization you can still follow the NPT and avoid the village entirely. The best of both worlds!

Adirondack Hamlets to Huts Accepting Registrations for
Historic Great Camp Traverse - Pilot Trip

As previously announced, we are running two pilot trips this fall of the Blue Mountain Lake to Raquette Lake Historic Great Camp Traverse. Although the September 30th to October 5th trip is full and has a waiting list, there remain five openings for the September 20th to September 25th trip. The five-night, four-day excursion is primarily a paddling trip, with a short day hike on the first day and an optional day of mountain biking on day four.

The first night’s lodging is at Hemlock Hall on Blue Mountain Lake. The next day includes a hike up Castle Rock, with its spectacular views of Blue Mountain Lake, and a paddle over to the second night’s lodging at The Hedges on the southwestern shore of Blue Mountain Lake.

Day two involves a ten-mile paddle, including a half-mile portage, from The Hedges to the third night’s lodging adjacent to St. William’s Church on Raquette Lake, followed by a dinner cruise aboard the W. W. Durant. On day three, following a tour of William West Durant’s Camp Pine Knot, participants will paddle up South Inlet and then hike to Great Camp Sagamore. On the fourth day, following a tour of Great Camp Sagamore, participants will have the option to mountain bike or paddle to Raquette Lake, and stay at what was once The Antlers Hotel and is now an outdoor and environmental education center owned and operated by SUNY Cortland.

The cost is $800, which includes food, lodging, and two guides. There are openings for five more participants. This trip is designed to provide participants with a genuine impression of the recreation experiences that future AHH routes will provide, as many of the elements of the Historic Great Camp Traverse are in place. This “pilot trip,” however, is not likely to be exactly what the eventual hamlet-to-hut route will be, as some components are still being developed. This trip, and our test-run trekkers, will provide AHH valuable feedback as we move forward with route development.

Jack Drury and Joe Dadey of Broadwing Adventures will serve as the guides for the trek.

Adirondack Hamlets to Huts Receives
Sustainable Forestry Initiative Grant

The Sustainable Forestry Initiative recently notified us that Adirondack Hamlets to Huts received a $10,000 grant towards the creation of a sustainable forestry educational display to be located in a hut-to-hut lodging facility on easement lands. We are especially grateful to Tim Burpoe of Molpus Woodlands who provided valuable input during the application process.

The idea behind this funding initiative and collaboration is to leverage this grant money to raise the additional funds necessary to help establish our first hut-to-hut route and lodging on conservation easement lands. This grant provides $10,000 towards what is a $20,000 project.

If you would like to support the development of our first route and lodging on NYS conservation easement lands please donate HERE.
Trail Clearing Day Planned

We need your help! Please help us get a trail ready for this fall’s two Historic Great Camp Traverse pilot trips. Adirondack Hamlets to Huts staff and volunteers will be clearing a trail in the Raquette Lake area on Saturday, September 8th, from 10:00 AM to approximately 2:00 PM.  Interested volunteers (preferably with bow saws) may contact Jack at jack@actls.org to help.
Frequently Asked Questions
What’s a Hut?
The word “hut” is a generic term for lodgings that range from the rustic to the elegant. Wall tents, yurts, and cabins are referred to as “huts,” as are (in Switzerland) mountain top hotels that can accommodate 300 people and serve elaborate meals.

Our vision for AHH is to utilize existing lodging to the greatest extent possible, thus the “huts” in our system will include not only wall tents, yurts, and cabins, but bed and breakfasts, quality motels, top-notch inns and 5-star hotels.

What’s a Hut-to-Hut System?
A chain of three or more accommodations intentionally spaced a day’s walk, bike, or ski apart. Hut systems are designed for human-powered travel. Huts provide space for eating, sleeping, and social interaction.
They can be self-service, which means that guests bring and cook their own food, or full-service, where meals and other amenities are provided.

Why the name Adirondack Hamlets to Huts?
Our goal is to connect Adirondack communities with the backcountry and each other. The routes that we establish will start, pass through, and finish in communities.  We want our name to reflect the importance of these connections and the value of integrating the experience of visiting Adirondack communities into the overall hut-to-hut experience.

What’s our mission?
To create, promote, and manage a world-class Adirondack hut-to-hut system that advances sustainable communities, conservation, and wellness.
